Myopia Management

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, causes distant objects to appear blurry while close-up objects remain clear.  It usually occurs when the eye grows too long, and it can continue to worsen as children grow.  Myopia is influenced by both genetics and environmental factors.

Our office offers several myopia management options.  Our goal is to manage myopia as an ongoing eye condition, not simply update glasses as the prescription changes.  Higher levels of myopia can increase the lifetime risk of eye health problems, including retinal tears or detachment, glaucoma, and myopic macular degeneration.  By managing myopia during childhood, we aim to slow progression and help reduce future risk.

Low-dose atropine eye drops may help slow myopia progression.  Side effects are uncommon at these low doses but may include light sensitivity or blurry near vision.  Because no eye drop is currently FDA approved specifically for slowing nearsightedness progression, this treatment is considered off-label.  Your doctor will recommend the most appropriate dose based on your child’s individual needs and risk factors.

Essilor Stellest lenses are specially designed eyeglass lenses that correct nearsightedness while helping slow myopia progression.  They are FDA authorized for children ages 6 to 12 at the start of treatment and may be a good option for those who are not ready for contact lenses or for families who prefer a glasses-based treatment.

Multifocal soft contact lenses are another option.  MiSight contact lenses are FDA approved for myopia management in certain children, and our office also offers NaturalVue Multifocal and Euclid Be Free lenses.  Some contact lens options may be used off-label depending on your child’s age, prescription, and treatment needs.

Schedule a myopia consultation with one of our doctors to determine which is the best option for your child.
